Born in New Jersey in 1811 ;
Died in Vernon, Connecticut, 13 March, 1874.
He early developed a talent for mechanics, became a machinist, and was conversant with every department of his trade.
His principal invention was the Sharps breech-loading rifle. In 1854 he removed to Hartford, Connecticut,

Sharps Model of 1851 Sporting Rifle
This is the famous Model 1851, or “box-lock” model, first made here in 1852.  It has the tape primer patented in 1845 by Washington, D.C. dentist Edward Maynard.
The tape primer was basically the same as the roll that a modern toy cap pistol fires.  About 2,000 were manufactured.  Later models had a pellet primer patented by R.S. Lawrence.
Sharps rifles of 1851 and 1852 models were made here until April 1855 for the Sharps Rifle Co. of Hartford, CT. <>

Billy Dixon and 27 buffalo hunters were surrounded by more than 500 Kiowa and Comanche warriors, spurred by their “medicine man” who convinced them they were invulnerable at the “white” shots. Produced with octagonal conical barrel, choice walnut wood for stock and forearm with German silver cap.

Sharps & Hankins Model 3C Four Barrel Pistol
 32RF
Serial #:  66  Manufacturer:  Sharps & Hankins
Model:  3C  Type:  Pistol
Barrel Length:  3-1/2 inch fluted  Finish:  blue
Grip:  rosewood
Description:  The right side of the frame is marked "C. SHARPS PATENT / JAN. 25 1859". This model was made without the side plate or extractor. The firing pin was mounted on the hammer and there is an interlock between the hammer and the barrel release to keep the pistol from opening or closing unless the hammer is on half cock. This one was made with smooth rosewood grips. These were made at the end of production and should probably be called a new variation. They are numbered in their own serial number series. This sub-variation of the third model Sharps & Hankins pistol is not marked in the flute on top of the barrel group.
