This late Civil War rifle has the "V/P/eagle head" proof
marks of Springfield Armory on top of the barrel which is one inch longer
than the standard rifle. Front sight designed to hold socket bayonet. The
action is equipped with both the Stabler magazine cutoff inside the lever
in front of the trigger and the Spencer cutoff, the wide extractor guide
on top of the breechblock with swiveling plate for cutoff. There is a guide
groove in the side of the lower breechblock support and a screw in the
right side of the action that rides in it. There is also a modification
of the extractor system. This was made for one of the Indian War Era Trials
but has not been identified for a specific trial.
